Bloggin off

Oh SugarHoneyIceTea! That's not how it was supposed to work out.
take a breath..OK, I'm good now.

Japan wins the World Cup.
Congratulations to Japan, they needed that.  After the devastation of earthquakes, tsunami and nuclear meltdown, this was a great healing balm to a nation in need.
In one of the most dramatic games in World Cup history, Japan flipped the US story on end to win in it's first ever WWC Title. An early 2nd half strike by sub Alex Morgan, put the US up 1-0.    With 10 minutes left in regulation, a Commerzebank Arena crowd of 48,817 witnessed a US defensive blunder that tied the game. In Extra Time,  It appeared that Abby Wambach had become immortal with another header goal to bring the US to the brink of championship, her 4th goal in 4 games. But, that was all a bit premature.  Japan countered with  the power of Godzilla. Off a corner kick, Homare Sawa struck a glancing shot that actually deflected off Abby's arm on it's way past goalkeeper hope Solo. In PKs, the US folded. Japan pounced, not like Tigger, more like a crouching tiger.
Amy says, "that was Gigunda"! which, according to the Webster's, translates to Extremely, freakin LARGE.

It is Japans first ever win over the US and the first World Cup for an Asian nation.

The scene in the ESPN production truck was a roller coaster of emotion.  Pre game-nervous anticipation. First half-intense focus. Morgan goal- sheer excitement. US blunder-utter confusion. Abby goal-unparalleled joy. Sawa goal-absolute shock. Penalty kicks-extreme silence. oh Scheiße!

The last tidbit I have to share is share is how truly international Frankfurt is.  Within a 6 block radius, I walk past numerous restaurants:  Indian, Italian, German, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and one simply called Asian Food.  Local watering holes include: The Fox & Hound British Pub, an Egyptian bar, an Aussie bar and the place where everyone knows our crew's name, O'Reiley's Irish Pub.  Airline offices nearby: Singapore Air, Turkish Airlines. TAM Airlines, SAS Scandanavian, China Air, Tunisia Air and, of course, Lufthansa. A block off the tourista scene of Kaiserstraße is a Third World vibe of small, open air markets, ethnic hair salons and too many stores that sell a myriad of that all that cheep plastic crap from China.  This street is a circus of smells, each aroma telling it's own story.  I could spend an entire month here in Frankville. oh wait, I just did.

Rock Me, Amedeus!

Today is the day!
Grab a Sanka and your blankie, cuddle up on the couch for the FIFAFrauen-WM,
known outside Deutschland as the Women's World Cup Final.

US vs Japan for the all the marbles TODAY (Sunday) at 11:45a PT on ESPN. We start on ESPN2 at 10a for a SportsCenter Special, switching back to the mutating monster mothership at 11a.  Okey dokey smokey?

This will be a game of contrasting styles.  Japan brings a disciplined, focused, passing game that can wear out opponents.  As you've seen, the US brings power and attitude.  With recent tragedies, Japan has the sympathy of the world on their side.  The US has been trying to shed the shadow of the '99 legacy on their road to RockStardom.  On paper, US should win, they are ranked #1, lead the head-to-head series 22-0-3 and have defeated Japan three times this year.  Japan counters with momentum and a wonderful underdog story.  And, oh, by the way, they beat Defending Champion Germany.  Japan features 32 yr old Homare Sawa, in her FIFTH World Cup.  Christie Rampone leads Team USA in her 4th Cup, the only player on either team who has won a World Cup-as part of the '99 champions.  They also have Mr Roboto on their side, but we have Abby Wambach.  Hmmmph! so there!

oh, did I tell you I'm using a Euro Keyboard? Z&Y are transposed.
I realize that throughout this blogathon, I have neglected to tell some of you exactly what I'm doing here.  Other aspects of my career have been as a camera operator and more recently, a Director.  The vast majority of the time, I am an Editor for live sports, mostly running a device called 'Elvis'. That's EVS to the sales dudes.  Basically, it's a high end Tivo, just with more buttons. The standard config is 4 inputs and 2 outputs with about 60 Hours of HD storage each.  We have 5 of those.  Recording video on this massive hard drive, we are able to replay stuff that just happened seconds ago. Some of what you see at home is not always 'live'.  We fake it. We 'turn around' or 'time shift' a camera angle that was not able to be shown live. Not only does the director have to watch everything live, he/she also has to keep Continuity in mind.  This is walking a fine line that looks great when it's right, it's really confusing when it goes wrong.  In this setup, I am responsible for editing all the in-game highlights, while my co-pilot Erick plays back all pre-produced stuff.  We both 'turn around' interviews and and reactions.  It can get quite chaotic pre-game and halftime. Post game is a Ted Nugent Free-For-All of ad-lib, off-the-rundown, live TV three ring circus. oy!
Team Tape! behind our Notes & Quotes glass wall. Thanks Peeps! you rock.
Overall, we have 4 EVS XT2s with over 4 Terabytes of storage, all tied together in a Matrix type of network. We have 13 IP Director stations where Producers and PAs can scan every video clip on the our entire net.  This includes 2 IPs in ESPN HQ in Bristol, Ct.  Three Avid suites here and one in Bristol round out the arsenal.  We can transfer video as data via our fiber optic lines to Bristol or one of our 4 Return Video lines.

To make it more interesting, we added another EVS yesterday. Yes Yesterday. With the US doing so well, the need grew to have a third operator, since we will be 'turning around' live shots from Japan, Afghanistan, Times Square, San Diego, The British Open and Wambach's Bro's Bar in Rochester.   Oh, this is going to be fun ;-)           (was that the right Sarc Mark, Shaw?)

 The Frankfurt Opera House.
The Alte Oper was built in 1880 by the architect Richard Lucae. It was one of the major opera houses in Germany until it was heavily damaged in World War II. Until the late 1970s it was a ruin, nicknamed "Germany's Most Beautiful Ruin". There were even efforts to just blow it up. Former Frankfurt Lord Mayor Rudi Arndt called for blowing it up in the 1960s, which earned him the nicknamed "Dynamite-Rudi".
Due to public pressure, it was finally fully reconstructed and reopened in 1981. Today it functions as a concert hall.  The fountain out front makes me us all hum the theme to Married With Children. Not far from here is a statue in honor of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, although Frankfurt was not one of his regular hangouts.  He spent some time here a year before his death trying unsuccessfully to recover some of his earlier fame and finances.

Meanwhile, back to South Sudan.

A little under 24 hours after South Sudan became the newest country on earth after declaring its independence from Khartoum -- a bloody battle it had waged intermittently since the 1950s -- the first true test of the fledgling republic took place.  On July 10, South Sudan played its very first international football match, becoming not just the youngest nation on earth, but the youngest national football team too.

What is it like when you meet your Doppleganger?  Wouldn't that just be weird? Well, the inevitable happened. In a unique Parallel Universe type of experience, that actually happened here.  Remember one of our earliest DDD, where we paired our ESPN PA Jorge Bustamante with Australia's Sally Shipard because of their similar hair?  A few days ago, hanging at our local watering hole of O'Reilly's Pub, Team Aussie showed up.  Sally wasn't convinced, but played along nicely.  Not convinced?  What the?  just look at these two! even better when you see the hair.

Gypies, Tramps or Thieves?

Another side of Frankfurt.

Did you know? Frankfurt is the financial center of Germany and has the largest financial center in continental Europe.  It is the seat of the German Federal Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the European Central Bank, as in 'The Euro", which sets the monetary policy for the entire Eurozone economy.

Personally, I can see how this is the center of the Euro-money scene, 'cause they have certainly taken many of my Euros!

Frankfurt is also all about trasportation.
The Frankfurt airport is the 10th busiest in the world, The autobahn interchange is the most heavily used interchange in the Europe. The River Main is a major shipping channel.  We get a constant flow of barges going both directions.  The river has been canalized with 34 large locks to allow vessels to navigate the total length of the river.  I have spied countless other watercraft, from sailboats to speedboats and kayaks to crewing boats.

PROGRAMMING NOTE-

Gypsy Futbol.
We finally got out for some actual soccer among the crew.  Today was a 'Production Day', meaning no live games to cover. After all of the work was done, we found the empty field next to the stadium very inviting. With 5 of us, all we needed was a 6th to play some 3on3.  As we were getting ready, a group of Gypsies kicking around near the vendor tent joined in. Soon, we had 7v7....on FieldTurf...in the sun. how great is that?  We know they were true gypsies, since most of them were working on the Closing Ceremonies crew.  They could have just been tramps, because they are the guys that operate the Giant Disco ball you will see.  Two of them were from Arizona State University.  Definitely thieves.

Cool, my own stadium!

US to the FINAL!

US advances to the Final!!!
Jackie's nephew is thrilled with the US win.

another gut-check game as the US overcame a fighting France team 3-1.  They now play Japan on Sunday at 11aPT.  Both teams won 3-1.  Both games featured game-winning goals by a star player.

After a 9th minute goal by Lauren Cheney, France picked the pace. They were tougher, hungrier and seemed to want it more.  Early in the 2nd half, they found a way...with a cross that was not touched and became a goal. Doh!  Solo had to play as if the striker would redirect the ball.  The Frenchie forward missed it and a surprised Solo could only watch the ball roll across the line.  After that, it seemed that another game would go into Extra Time.  But, Have no fear.  SuperDuper Power Forward Abby Wambach is here!   As Lauren Cheney launched a monster corner kick to the far post, she eluded her defender to find the only open space in front of the goal mouth. It seemed as if she would hit her head on the crossbar as she out-leaped the French keeper to power home another header.  A few minutes later, Alex Morgan sealed it with a breakaway chip.
"This is our journey, this is our dream." -Abby Wambach.

Japan also got a go-ahead goal from legend Homare Sawa as they beat Sweden 3-1 to reach it's first World Cup Final.

A Tasty Semifinal

Semifinal today.

US vs France.  9am PT ESPN.  Check out our opening  'Tease' narrated by Martin Sheen, edited by Tara, Adam, Twe and Nick. That airs at 8:30a. It will give you chills.

It may have felt like it, but Sunday's momentous win over Brazil was not the Grand Finale.   The US ladies have their hands full with a hungry French side that would love to shock the world.

Big questions- has the US had enough rest after that emotional roller coaster Quarterfinal?  Have they recovered physically?  I know that I have barely recovered (may have pulled a hamstring in celebration). Will being the 'Favorites' play into a Head Game?  Who will start for Red Carded Rachel Buehler?  Will they take France too lighlty?  Will Coach Sundhage do the Chuck Berry dance?

Yesterday, once again, the open road beckoned me.  Again, I ventured out mapless with only the online image in my head. Again, I was delighted in what I found.
Choosing the R3 path along the river, I quickly left the city behind and was treated to countless country postcard scenes.

Riding through farmland and a few small towns, I stopped in the town of Kelsterbach for some refueling.  Shelby! come quick.  I may have found your fountain of youth- a Self-Serve, Soft-Serve Ice Cream machine!!!!!

Daily Døpplégångér DoubleShot-

In honor of US Defender Ali Kreiger's final PK to win the game, we hereby dopple her to Law & Order's Angie Harmon.  Thanks for making that one.

Here in Germany, bikes are for everyone.  In the city, there are Businessmen in suits on bikes, TwentySomethings commuting and teenagers on BMX trick bikes.  Out here, it's the bright Lycra colors of real riders, Retirees on cruisers and families with babies in trailers.  At one point I came across a cycle mom and her three two-wheeled ducklings.  The last kid in line looked at me as if I were some kind of freak (I get that a lot). Being a fierce international sports competitor, I wasn't going to let that look go without a response.  Like the Lance Armstrong's 'Stare Down' of Jan Ulrich in the '01 Tour de France, I challenged that 5yr old with my own look.  His pace faded in utter defeat- the cycling equivalent of a 1st round knockout.  Take that, Mini-Ulrich!

Along the river, along the rail lines and along these bike paths, there are countless garden plots.  These are places where the city dwellers can come for solace and to grow something of their own.  Most are in the 30X40 foot range and have some sort of shed. Some of these appear to be more like a summer cabin, I suspect that they could stay here over night if needed. This time of year, everything is in bloom and occasionally fruits and veggies are for sale.

Numerous double-track dirt lanes lead to many more of these gardens.  I ventured down one of these, because it seemed to beckon me.  It was nice to get off asphalt and back to dirt, my first cycling love.  Unbeknownst to me, that trail led to a Nature Preserve.  I really wish I could read German, the information sign probably had some great story about that bird and this amphibian recovering from near extinction.

Oh yeah, there is also another Semifinal today- At 11:45a PT, Japan and Sweden battle for a trip to the final.
A friggin HUGE thanks to Jen and Mer for the recent contribution of homemade Choc Chip cookies.  It was great to hang with for a tasty Turkish dinner last night. Fluff enjoyed something I can't pronounce while I had Spicy Lamb with vegetables.  oh baby!

I followed Erick's lead and ordered some Turkish Coffee.  Wow, if you have never tried this, you must. It's a thick, strong java brewed in a small copper kettle with the fine grounds waiting for you in the bottom of your cup.   According to Valdez, the caffeine level is off the charts. He was up until 5AM!!!  (glad I had the decaf)
Meet me in Frankfurt on Friday, I'll ya buy some!

Blue Bayou

Good morning campers!

With a little downtime to recover, I stumbled upon another great area to hang out in.  Walking aimlessly (or, rambling randomly), but with a strong purpose -to find a good cup o joe, I strolled toward the Opera House. Then, I noticed a street to the right that was blocked to traffic. Upon further review, it is just what I'm looking for, a wide cobble stoned street with cafes, juice bars and street musicians. Großs Brockenheimer Straße is a bit touristy, but, I'm not quite a Local yet.  A great moment to soak in the vibes.

Not quite Simon and Garfunkel

On the 12th anniversary of USA's last WWC title and only other WWC shootout, USA eliminates Brazil on PKs to reach its 6th straight semifinals. USA is the only team to reach the semis of all 6 WWC.
Abby Wambach ties the game in extra time (120'+2) with the latest goal in WWC history.
11th career WWC goal for Wambach, t-4th in WWC history.
1st game in WWC history with both teams scoring in extra time.
Marta scores 2 goals (68', 92'), first converting a penalty, then striking in extra time.
With 14 career WWC goals, Marta ties Birgit Prinz for most in WWC history.

Getting out of TouristaVille the other day, I got on my Bike Friday and started pedaling.  I wasn't exactly sure where, but the online map showed a large greenspace South of Sachenhausen, the hip nightlife area that Coy noted has a Portland flavor.  The paper map I carried in my pocket ended there. So, I meandered blindly through the neighborhoods, climbing slightly.  After half an hour, I found a path that lead into a forest.  Why not?  It was a great change of pace from the city.  Trails, trails everywhere.  Fresh air! My kind of place.  And signs, too. I love how well laid out the bike paths are.  At one point, I stopped to study the map and realized that this is part of the route I had researched before I came to Frankfurt.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Frankfurt-Gr-nG-rtel
I assumed it would be farther out of town. Now, I find myself at the Southwest corner of the route I have been pondering.  Basically a series of paths, circumnavigating the city (with a few shortcuts through suburbia and farmlands(,the route is based on a 1712 map defining the Frankfurt area.  I hope to explore this more.

There Goes My Hero

Epic, Classic, Historic.

Astounded, Relieved, Thrilled.

Frustration, Exhaustion, Elation.

Callback, Comeback, Payback.

Last night's US victory over Brazil was a 657 page Grisham novel with multiple, twisting plot lines.  I will leave the details to other 'journalists' with more time and more resources, but here is my condensed version-

Sure, it would save time to fast forward to Extra Time, but that would be the equivalent of skimming the New Testament without the historical context of the Old.  In the first sentence of Chapter One, Brazil succumbed to the pressure with a most unfortunate miscue by Daiane (it's really spelled that way), an Own Goal that put the our Ladies up 1-0 in the 2nd minute! really? Is it going to be that easy?  well, NO.  Chapters 2 through 13 revealed villains, betrayal, confusion and foul play.

Not long after halftime, Marta makes one of those moves that only #10 can do, touching the ball over herself and a couple defenders to create space in the box.  Replays showed that Rachel Buehler and Marta were even, shoulder to shoulder, each slightly tugging on the other's jersey, each fighting for that extra edge. Both went down. The tentative ref seemed to take about 10 seconds as she thought about it.  Red Card for Buehler, Penalty Kick for Brazil. What? Seriously? So, here comes the PK.  Hope Solo gets her application to Super Hero School approved with a brilliant save! Pandemonium on the field, in our production trailer and in soccer houses around the US.  We were going nuts!
Scraaaaaatch! (phonograph Sound FX)  The ref saw that defender Christie Rampone had one foot inside the box when the kick was taken = Do Over.  Marta stepped up and hit it home.  Tied 1-1.

As the game continued, the crowd became anti-Brazil and Anti-Marta, whistling with disrespect each time she touched the ball.  Both teams had shots bounce off the crossbar.  90 minutes down, Extra Time is next. Before the sound of the whistle to start play had faded, Marta displayed another level of her game changing skill with a shot that no other women's player could ever dream of doing. With all direct angles covered, she applied her deft touch to loop the ball lightly over Solo to the far post and into the net.  Simply, brilliant.   That is what sets her apart, that is why she has been the World Footballer of the Year 5 consecutive times.  Brazil, then slowed the pace, held the ball and delayed the game whenever possible. The next chapter starts to look predicable.  But, there are a few chapters left, turn the page.

Much like that Donovan goal against Algeria last year for Team USA, another sublime run was about to take place.  After just over 120 minutes of play, with only US 10 players on the pitch,  the US worked the ball out of the defensive corner, across the field to Megan Rapinoe, who managed enough strength to launch one, last long distance, left footed cross.  Hours passed as the ball floated serenely through the air.  Abby Wambach knew where it would go, knew how to position herself, knew the keeper was approaching, knew the defender was tired.  Life was in slow-motion. In the next moment, like a Bruckheimer film, time and space caught up to regular speed. Abby did what Abby does, heading the ball into the back of the net to tie the game!!

WOWFREAKINWOW!! (I'm not going to say OMG here.)

This could be better than the Donovan Moment. Now, THIS is pandemonium.
I have never heard intercom as loud.  I'm about to pee my pants!

hold on! take a deep breath.

Now we move on to Penalty Kicks...anyone remember World Cup '99?
Boxx takes the first shot- SAVED. not a good way to start.. doh! hold up a sec.  The keeper moved off the line way before the shot was taken. Do Over.  This one goes in. Whew!  All 5 US ladies would score.  Like Briana Scurry in '99, Solo rose to the occasion to stop the shot by Daiane! (bad day for Daiaiaiane)

Hope, THAT was huge.  Thank you.  Super Hero Status approved.

Ali Krieger secured the game with her textbook shot to the lower, left corner.  The revelry began.   A hard earned celebration showed a team in pure joy, Buehler crying in relief and coach Pia Sundhage pulling off some Chuck Berry air guitar moves.
