Quoting my good friend, TK, There are two things that you don't want to see how they are made. Sausage and Television. For today's conversation, let's just stick to TV. As with many of these ginormous world sporting events, it all starts with a host broadcast feed, which produces a 'Clean' Feed of every game. In this case, the company contracted is conveniently named Host Broadcast Services (HBS). They send their signal from each stadium to the International Broadcast Center (IBC). Broadcasters from each country pay to take this feed. ESPN has the rights to broadcast US Language broadcasts. In the most basic sense, ESPN takes the Clean Feed and adds graphics and Announcers. But, it is much more complicated than that.
ESPN has a massive Host Set down on the end of Copacabana beach. The IBC is 29 kilometers to west in Barra Da Tujica. see a problem here? Well, the ESPN engineering think tank solved that with Fiber optic lines, which gives us 10 lines of HD video to the Host Set and 4 in return. So, some of us are at the IBC, others at the Host Set, but it's virtually seamless. In general, the IBC is like a giant funnel & filter- we collect all the video/audio, then edit or time-shift and send down the line for the Host Set to air in their shows. They cut the live studio show, add graphics, music and play out pre-edited video segments. Our Communications guys have set up the intercom so it sounds like our Producers and Directors are in the next room.
