Found this critter on my bike ride a few days ago. The Capybara, the largest rodent in the world. These mostly docile dudes are 3-4 feet long, 2 ft tall and can weigh over a hundred pounds. They live in groups along waterways and thick forests. Sometimes hunted as meat or for their thick fatty skin, which is used as a pharmaceutical.
I'll be honest, at first it scared the daylights out of me. But, after watching a few other runner and cyclists cruise on by, I couldn't help myself to try a few ride-by-photos. This fella just kept on munching on grass, unfettered, like the napping driver of the car next to him.
Circles and
Friends.

A few themes I’m beginning to see here are Circles and Friends. New Friends, old Friends and ‘Single Serving
Friends’ (from Fight Club, people you only spend a short time with). Great to run into old friends and
acquaintances that I haven’t seen years.
Schedules seem to me lining up to see a few more in the coming weeks.
Circles, well they are everywhere.
Obviously, the soccer ball. Some of the
stadiums, one of the largest traffic circles I have ever seen is just a mile
away. In the center is a massive
Performing Arts center and gigante bus station.
I would guess-timate that it’s ½ mile around the circumference. And of course, in full cliché mode, many
stories will come Full Circle. I can’t
help it. It’s the Circle of Life. Kinda
makes me want to break out in song.

so, you really want to get into Brazillian music? Yeah. Me,
too. I have found another source of
local intel. Julia, one of our local Production Assistants has become an an
invaluable resource for anything we find ourselves needing around here.
She’s part travel agent, part shopping expert, part translation professor and full time
Fixer. She recommends the music of
Caetano Veloso. Wow- so smooth.
Caetano has quite an intriguing history here. First becoming known for being involved in
the musical movement called Tropicalismo- music
and poetry combined with theater. The 1960’s era government didn’t seem to
agree with his politics, so they arrested him. After a while, he was exiled to
London for two years. Since his return, he has won 2 Grammy awards and 9 Latin
Grammys.
Hugo Alves used to play professional soccer for a living. He
remains connected to the sport, but not in the way he intended. Now his uniform
consists of a red T-shirt and pants, and he makes soccer balls at a factory in
prison. Great story from NY Times.
For millions of us, soccer is life. It’s what Obi-Wan was
really talking about- "It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together". especially for this guy-
