All good in my hood.  who am I kidding?  it's freakin geat!  I'm a freakin soccer geek working the freakin World Cup!!  (insert shot of me running around our edit room with my shirt pulled up over my face like I just scored a goal!). ouch!! !think I just ran into a desk.

Things are not so good for Italy. Chuck Norris never showed. Costa Rica advances through to the Knockout Stage for only the second time in history with Bryan Ruiz header to down Italy 1-0.  This officially eliminates England, who was last knocked out of Group Stage in 1958...before the Beatles formed.

Earlier, France put down their fine Bordeaux and stinky cheese to pummel the Swiss 5-2. What a difference four years can make. At this point in 2010, the French seemed like a black hole.  Their team was in pieces, the coach was a head case and the country was fed up will all the circus antics.  But, it sure made good fodder for TV Networks and part-time bloggers!

At the current rate, this edition of the World Cup would nearly tie the previous 2 in total goals, before even getting to the knockout stage.

have you seen the Open to our show?  It's an animated piece that ties in many aspects of Brazil, from the jungles to the dirt streets to the historic Maracaña Stadium. Esther says it's Jake and The Neverland Pirates.  I wonder if that's the same Jake from State Farm.

What the, What the, What?

Sausage Making Chronicles-
In order for you to get pretty pictures at home, the video signal takes a long, circuitous route. It starts at the Stadiums. Each venue has 30 cameras, which all feed into the HBS Production Truck. Most of these are independently sent to the IBC along with the Program Feed that the Director and his crew created.  At the IBC, the feed is distributed to all of the broadcasters from around the world, along with a few live cameras from each stadium.   Significant plays from any camera angle are available just minutes after it happens via File Transfer from HBS' massive server array.  ESPN takes the live feed from each game, but while that is going on, we are are making a clip of every goal, yellow/red card, save or injury and editing our halftime highlight package.  Usually, the Clean Feed has what we need. If not, we search the live cameras. If it's still not there, we have can access the HBS server to look for any play from any camera.  Once the halftime whistle blows, the studio at the Host Set takes over. Within a few minutes, the Director cues to roll. We play our highlight package down down one of the fiber lines.  The Technical Director pushes the appropriate button (hopefully) to put us on the air.

The output of the Control Room is fed back to the IBC and hitches a ride up to Bristol Ct via more fiber optic lines. From there ESPN sends it into space, bouncing it off a satellite or two, down to your cable provider and through the labyrinth of underground fiber and coax to appear magically at you TV. you are welcome.  In the next few days, I'll have some tech talk for you - prepare for acronym overload.
